Day 110: These are the Special Times

Day 110: These are the Special Times

#JuCan – #CobbFamCan is heading east toward Denver. We #WalkAcrossAmerica and think of those facing cancer during the holidays…

We miss our Ju so much, especially this time of year. She passed away 2 days before one of her favorite holidays- Halloween. We went trick-or-treating to honor her and to carry the JuFlame forward.

The last Thanksgiving we had before she was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma (2011) was spent in Alabama, where we had just moved. We were surrounded by love and laughter and a house full of cousins (when my brother and his family came down from Michigan to spend what we would not realize until a month later was priceless time).

We spent Ju’s last Thanksgiving (2012) on earth at a house in Houston where she helped cook her last meal. No one was interested in helping to cook the southern Thanksgiving feast (that Jonathan’s mom “Ma D” had taught me to prepare). Only Ju and I were in the kitchen and I can even remember in my mind what she was wearing and she was in charge of the Kitchen Aid mixer- all sweet potatoes and mashed potatoes! She also made the ever-so-difficult Southern Mac’nCheese. As Celine Dion sings, “These Are Special Times”, I am reliving the words as they perfectly describe my feelings about our last Thanksgiving in that small, pink kitchen where it was just Mama and her sweet Ju:

“In these moments, moments of our lives
All the world is ours
And this world is so right
You and I sharing this time together
Sharing the same dream [a cure]
As the time goes by we will find

These are the special times
Times we’ll remember
These are the precious times
The tender times we’ll hold in our hearts forever
These are the sweetest times
These times together
And through it all, one thing will always be true
The special times are the times I share with you

With each moment, moment passing by
We’ll make memories that will last all our lives
As you and I travel through time together
Living this sweet dream [called life]
And every day we can say

These are the special times
Times we’ll remember
These are the precious times
The tender times we’ll hold in our hearts forever
These are the sweetest times
These times together
And through it all, one thing will always be true
The special times are the times I share with you

These tender moments
When heaven is so close [we never knew]
These are the moments that I know

These are the special times
Times we’ll remember
These are the precious times
The tender times we’ll hold in our hearts forever
These are the sweetest times
These times together
And through it all, one thing will always be true
The special times are the times I share
Are the times we share, are the times I share, with you
Special times I share with you”

This picture (taken as she celebrated the anniversary of her first surgery
4-12-13) and the memory of her last Thanksgiving spent with Papa, MaD (also in brain cancer treatment), and her aunt, uncle and cousin are the “Special Times”. We will strive to make Ju proud and to keep moving forward. And for those of you in a battle for life right now, #JuCan – UCan – GODCAN!!!

Day 108: Vail, Colorado – Winter Storm Warning

Day 108: Vail, Colorado – Winter Storm Warning

Team #JuCan – #CobbFamCan has walked as far as “humanly” possible up the Vail Pass! You can probably hear us breathing from Houston (10,000+ ft.)!! It appears there may be a section we are unable to traverse (given the trail is NOT visible) without skis, snowmobile, or a gargantuan hairdryer (would definitely blow the fuse) :))

There is an impending winter storm forecast to hit tomorrow and deliver even MORE snow! We have many goals to accomplish on our journey, but arriving to Walt Disney World SAFELY is, and will remain our #1 priority. Besides, it simply isn’t wise to argue with Mother Nature or Jim Cantore. And while Bill Belichick may not put much faith in the Weather Channel, WE BELIEVE! 20 years of living in South Florida and countless hurricanes have taught us the extreme value of preparedness!

Vail was gorgeous and we were thrilled to be interviewed by the Vail Daily who found us on the snow covered trails and photographed our family, Prancer included! How neat to hear that the young photographer was a colon cancer survivor since the age of 18! The most ironic part of the story is that he was treated at MD Anderson and shares the same oncologist as Jonathan, Dr. Wolff.

Thank you to our Houston friend (Francesca London) whom we knew through the girls’ ballet class, we were able to stay in a condo in Beaver Creek for 2 days while we made our way through Vail. What a God appointment this morning to meet a man who was remodeling the condo next door! He was so moved by our journey and our “can” message. He and his wife were nearly killed last year when they were struck on their bicycles by a drunk driver in a large SUV. He had such empathy for our situation and understood the battle, the loss, and the desire to give back. Thank you for blessing us, Patrick!

Today we #WalkAcrossAmerica for Maggie who is a 4 year old princess battling Neuroblastoma and recently had surgery. Please pray for her to be cancer free and to be able to resume the life of a little girl! https://www.facebook.com/pages/Maggies-Mermaids/547354528724560
